I came across this old red barn while travelling through Washington State. It was one of those scenes where the light made me stop.
The early morning sun was catching the barn and the surrounding fall colours, bringing out the deep reds, golds and greens. Against all of that, the quilt pattern on the side of the barn added an unexpected detail.
These painted patterns, known as barn quilts, can be found on barns throughout rural areas of the United States and Canada. Some have a connection to a family or farm, while others are simply chosen for their design and the tradition they represent.
What I liked most was how naturally it all belonged there. The weathered barn, the changing leaves, the mountains in the distance and that small piece of colour and pattern all came together.
I called the photograph Heritage in Red. Sometimes you find the best images simply by taking the back roads and paying attention to the light.
